Last Day of Singapore Design Week

It happened that my bookbinding workshop coincided with the Singapore Design Week activities in the National Design Centre.

Here are some astonishing works of one of the world's foremost design company,  Heatherwork Studio in UK.
UK Pavilion, Shanghai World Expo, China 2010
The UK pavilion was designed as a distinct structure and breath-taking experience, rather than simply a building to host an exhibition, it was an enigmatic cube made up of 60,000 clear acrylic rods each 7.5m-long.
It looks so dazzling when lighted up.

BookBinding Workshop : Reliure a la japonais

My 2-day masterclass by Boyoung Lee of 예술제본 _ Reliure d'Art 흘리위르공간. 1st day at The Art House and 2nd day at National Design Centre.  What I learnt this time is the Reliure a la japonais,   an interesting French interpretation of Japanese stab binding technique. Instead of exposing the stitching, the binding is neatly encased with covers exquisitely wrapped with calligraphy mounting cloth.

In the progress ....... (from Left to Right, Top to Bottom)
Stitched each section of 2 folios together with a pc of Tyvek® ,
pasted the Tyvek® together with a slip of cardboard in between,
wrapped the book block with cloth,
making of the hardbound cover

The Calligraphy Cloths are gorgeous.  They are brought from France by our instructor

Natural Maps

Guess where are they ?

You won't be able to find them though.  They are actually revealed after scraping away the peeled off paints on my company's walls due to interior moisture.

Received this at my mailbox a week ago.  Make me ponder why such a recognised magazine needs to use to this kind of gimmick?

Da Vinci: Shaping The Future

The exhibit focuses  on the Codex Altanticus,  da Vinci's largest notebook, which features ground-breaking designs, stunning artistic sketches and pioneering technological innovations. One can only admire his talents in so many areas - arts, mathematics, natural sciences, architecture, technology and music. This man was truly a genius, and a crazy one.

"Let no man who is not a Mathematician read the principles of my work"

Interwoven throughout the journey are five contemporary art installations, including three new commissions, which reveal how da Vinci's ideas and thinking remain strikingly resonant today.

This section showcases the glass sculptures by Luke Jerram depicting microscopic structure of Malaria, Human Papillomavirus, SARS Coronavirus,  Swine Flu and Hand Foot & Mouth. Beautiful.

All in all, it is an exhibit one should not miss.

The Mime Order

The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon is actually book two of the Bone Season series.  I only found out half-way through.  Will read Book One some other time.

Not a bad story.  Just that things move along a little slow at the beginning. Missing Book One, It also took me a while to really understand the incredible 'spiritual' world created.

The Storyline in Book #2
Paige Mahoney has escaped the brutal prison camp of Sheol I, but her problems have only just begun: many of the survivors are missing and she is the most wanted person in London... As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on the dreamwalker, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city's gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take centre stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner. Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided.
