1st Part : Our Vision of The Universe
Jain Mandala
17th or 18th century | Gujarat, India
Painting on Cloth
Collection of the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore
Jainism has been practised in India since at least the 6th century BC. Like Hindus and Buddhists, Jains seek liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Cosmological diagrams like this were used in rituals and medication. A sky-clad Jina, one of 24 teachers in the Jaain pantheon, sits in the centre pf a grid of divinities. Inscribed with mantras and seed syllables, this painting manifests the higher realms of existence in Jain cosmology.
