"The opinion that art should have nothing to do with politics is itself a political attitude." ~ George Orwell, Why I Write
"Political language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solitidy to pure wind." ~ George Orwell, Politics and the English Language
"A family with the wrong members in control; that, perhaps, is as near as one can come to describing England in a phrase." ~ George Orwell, The Lion and the Unicorn
❛As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me.
They do not feel any enmity against me as an individual, as the saying goes. Most of them, I have no doubt are kind-hearted law-abiding men who would never dream of committing murder in private life. On the other hand, if one of them succeeds in blowing me to pieces with a well-placed bomb, he will never sleep any the worse for it. He is serving his country, which has the power to absolve him from evil.❜
The above is the first two paragraphs of The Lion and the Unicorn : Socialism and the English Genius by George Orwell. He was referring to the overwhelming strength of patriotism, national loyalty, of which he also mentioned, even Christianity and international Socialism are as weak as straw in comparison with it. How true ?
