Gum Dichromate Workshop

A crash course @deck_sg last Saturday afternoon.  Definitely challenging and need more patient and time to properly develop the prints.

Unfortunately it started raining heavily after our first round of exposure and the UV exposure box could only take 4 prints at a time.

Yet I managed to make 3 duotone prints.

Samples by our teacher Juhardi.

For Gum Dichromate printing, it is recommended to use acid free Hot Pressed (smooth surface) watercolour paper.

The main materials needed are Gum arabic and Potassium Dichromate. Sodium Bisulfite and Glyoxal are only used for sizing and strengthening the paper.

The simplest way to prepare the transparencies for a tri-color print is using the Color Range (Highlights/Midtones/Shadows) under Select in Photoshop.

A tiny squeeze of pigment-based watercolor paint with 30ml of Gum Arabic and 30ml of Potassium Dichromate are enough to coat 2 pcs of A4 paper.

Exposure : 30 mins.

In fact, it is best to soak (develop) the print in water bath for 24 hours to thoroughly remove the gum residue before applying the subsequent color.  Thus a tri-color print actually needs three days to do it properly.

Not a good day for printing.

After soaking the prints overnight to clean away the gum residue, the images really looked a lot cleaner and clearer.
