Omakase at Kyuu

Kyuu by Shunsui @Keong Saik Rd

This place was recommended by a colleague, well known for its overflowing ikura rice bowl, which the chef will keep heaping ikura (salmon roe) spoonful by spoonful onto a bowl of Hokkaido rice until you say stop! Ok. Sure sounded interesting.

Once we reached there at 7pm, I was famished and my boy's appetite was definitely bigger than mine, thus we went straight for the upgrade omakase course 179++ per pax.

Here came the dishes :

1st course - artfully plated 3 kinds of assorted appetisers

2nd course - Seasonal Shami Platter (9 kinds of sashimi)
It was a visual feast. One of my favourite.

3rd course - charcoal grilled king oyster mushroom with sweet soy sauce. Crunchy with smokey flavour, though the soy sauce was not enough.

4th course - smoked salmon.  5th course - lady fingers with salty minced meat, which tasted exactly like those cooked in a zi char restaurant. It's kind of a miss.

6th course - King crab with vinegar and sudachi lime. My favourite. The lightly charred flesh was delicious and juicy, It went well with the vinegar and sudachi lime.

7th course - baked potato with butter soy sauce. Tasted normal and felt cheapo with such course added within the set.
8th course - Kagoshima A3 Wagyu beef sirloin with red wine sauce. Tasty, chewy and tender.

9th course - Now came the highlight. Before it's being served, you get to choose between a small, medium or large bowl of rice. I chose a small bowl while my boy took a medium bowl. Once the bowl of levelled off rice topped with sea urchin reached our table, Chef Araki came over with a large container of ikura. Once we're ready with our cameras, he started heaping spoonful by spoonful of ikura onto the bowl shouting "Yoisho!" with each spoon until we said stop. That was fun.

Final course - homemade ice cream, Yuzu Sorbet.

Verdict : 3.5/5 some hits, some misses. Overall satisfactory, though not really hit the mark of my expectation with the price.
